Prenatal Visits/New Patients

Parents who are expecting a new baby are always welcome to come by and see our office and speak with our staff before their baby is born. Parents who are looking for a new pediatrician because of an insurance change or relocation are also welcome to come in and learn more about our office before making the first appointment for their child. All of our pediatricians offer “prenatal” visits by appointment.

Newborn Care in Hospital

We see newborn babies in the El Camino Hospital Newborn Nursery every morning. You are welcome to call and register with us before your baby arrives. When you come in to labor and delivery, give your pediatrician’s name to the hospital staff so they can notify our office once your child is born.

If your child is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), please notify us so that we can visit you and be familiar with your child’s condition before his/her first visit in the office.

If you would like one of us to be your baby’s pediatrician, but are delivering at a hospital other than El Camino Hospital, your obstetrician can recommend another pediatrician to see your baby while in the hospital. Please call us when your baby is discharged so that we can schedule your first office visit.

We will circumcise your newborn son at your request before he is discharged from the nursery. We do not do circumcisions in our office. If you are not sure whether to have your son circumcised, we will be happy to discuss the issues with you. To read about the procedure's risks and benefits, see Circumcision in the Newborn Information section.

Well Child Care

Well child appointments for children under 5 are scheduled year round. For children 5 and up, we do not do well child checks from December through March, unless your child has a specific need for a winter physical. This avoids exposing your healthy child to the many viral infections which circulate in winter months and gives us more time to attend to the higher volume of sick children at this time of year. It also helps ensure proper timing of the “kindergarten” checkup and vaccines.

At each checkup, we monitor your child’s growth and development and provide age-appropriate information and advice about common topics, as well as answering any specific questions you may have.

Checkups will be with your child’s primary doctor and should be scheduled as far in advance as possible, especially if you want your appointment at a certain time of day. Vaccines are provided at regularly scheduled well child checks with catch-up vaccines scheduled as needed.

PPD (Tuberculosis tests) are done Monday-Friday and must be read by our staff Monday-Saturday (48-72 hours after placement) in order to be valid. There are no PPDs placed on the Friday before at 3-day weekend.

If you have multiple health concerns to discuss at your child’s annual checkup, we may need to book a second appointment to address them properly. Similarly, if your child is sick on the day of his/her checkup, it may be best to focus on diagnosing and treating the illness and reschedule the checkup for another day.

School, Daycare, Camp, and Sports Forms

Forms for school, daycare, camp, and sports are filled out at the time of your child's appointment or within 1 week of receipt if they are given to us later. If your child has an ongoing health problem, we may need to call you or schedule an appointment in order to update his or her information before filling out a form. Please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope or faxing/pickup information when you give us the form. Please fill out your portion of the form completely before giving it to us, as we often have to attest that we have reviewed the patient/parent’s portion of the form. Please see our Financial Disclaimer for the current FORM FEE, which will be waived if you bring the forms at the time of your child's well child visit or routine medication follow-up visit (i.e. Asthma medications, ADD medications, other chronic medications.) We will not fill out forms at "sick" visits.

“Sick” Appointments

If your child becomes ill, we can almost always see him or her the same day. Please call as early as possible if you need a same-day appointment. Phones open at 9am. If your child’s primary doctor is out of the office, you will have the option of seeing one of our other physicians that day or your child’s own doctor when she returns to the office.

If you have an appointment for one child and want to have another child seen at the same time, PLEASE call our office as soon as possible so that we can accommodate your needs without inconveniencing other patients.

If you are calling about an ongoing health concern, we can usually see your child within 1 week of your call. For these concerns, you may prefer to call after 10:00am, when the phones are not as busy.

Telephone Advice

Our staff is available by phone from 9am-noon and 2-5pm. Our phones are busiest between 9-10am. If you would like advice, our staff is available to address your concerns or book an appointment if necessary. All advice is discussed with or reviewed by our doctors on a daily basis. Click here for after-hours phone advice information.

Travel Consultations

Hospital Drive Pediatrics (HDP) offers Travel Consultations for established patients travelling to certain high-risk countries. All services are provided by our Pediatricians; vaccines are recommended by the pediatrician and administered by a medical assistant. For countries or situations with which we are not familiar, we will refer you to a travel medicine clinic.

Holidays

We are closed New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. We are open 9am – noon on New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve, as well as the Friday after Thanksgiving.
